SAN DIEGO - San Diego State Hockey Club sophomore Connor O’Brien will start at goalie for Friday’s season-opening game against Long Beach, Aztecs head coach Chris Migliore announced today. The start will mark the first time O’Brien has started on Opening Night.
O’Brien joined SDSU midway through last season and immediately turned in stellar performances, posting a 3.40 GAA in nine appearances. The Mission Viejo native bested junior Filip Curkovic over two weeks of practice for the opening night honors, but the two netminders are expected to split time this season.
“It’s a tough decision when you have two great goalies,” said Coach Migliore, “but it’s a luxury to have. Conor has been great and will be getting the start, and the team is looking forward to starting off the season with a win.”
Tickets for the Sept. 13 Opening Night game are available online now through the SDSU Hockey Shop at sdsuhockey.com. General Admission is $5, and SDSU students are admitted for free with their RedID.
Opening Night also marks the launch of the team’s fundraising initiative, Aztecs Unite. All fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to support the Salvation Army, and fans who make a two-can donation will receive their game ticket for free.
