Hold on to your hats, the Baja line has arrived. The offensive trio of Alex Cambas, Conor Pope and Travis Sevilla exploded for a combined eight points on Friday night, leading the SDSU Hockey Club (@sdsuhockey) past the UNLV Rebels, 13-5.
"We're teammates, linemates, roommates, soulmates," Cambas said after the game. "We're having a good time and glad to treat our fans to a show."
With SDSU (4-4; 4-2 West) carrying a 2-1 lead into the second period, Sevilla set up Cambas during a penalty kill for the forward's third shorthanded goal of the season. That tally set off what would become a seven-goal outburst for the Aztecs, the most goals they've scored in one period this season. Cambas would return the favor later in the period, setting up Sevilla for another shorthanded goal at 5:28, while Pope found the back of the net on the power play at 3:00 to give SDSU an 8-3 lead.
The Aztecs dominated in special teams situations on Friday, as they converted four of six power play opportunities and again showed the ability to make visitors pay for mistakes at the Kroc. Defensemen John Riley and Alec Christoff were particularly effective with a man-advantage, notching a goal and an assist each on the power play.
Lost in the scoring parade was another solid effort by junior Danny Koressel, who scored a hat trick and added an assist. The Moorpark, Calif. native now has eight points in as many games and six in his last two combined.
Darius Newhall, who received his first start of the season in net, shook off an early mistake to finish with 25 saves on 30 shots. Newhall denied UNLV for most of the game, as one of his goals allowed came on a Rebels power play and two others came in the final minutes of the blowout. What more, he did so without Thomas Lapp, Eric Stelnick and Justin Tutag playing in front of him, who were each held out due to injuries sustained at ASU last weekend. Senior Matt Bouchard left Friday's game with an upper-body injury and is doubtful for Saturday's contest.
The Aztecs are back at it today at the Kroc at 3:15 p.m. Tickets are free for SDSU students with a RedID and $5 for general admission. Limited edition SDSU Hockey wristbands will be for sale at the entrance for $5 each.
